Description:

With over 11 million residents, the Republic of Cuba is the most populous country in the Caribbean. Its culture and customs were influenced by Native Americans, who were the first settlers. The Spanish Empire ruled it for almost 400 years and left its mark on the culture, as did the African slaves who were brought there in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The salsa dance is an example of how these cultures fused together. It began as an Afro-Latin dance rooting back to the period of the great slave shipments, which forced hundreds of thousands of Africans to the shores of Cuba. African music was eventually influenced by sounds in the new environment. In time, the Afro-Latin dance borrowed elements of Spanish troubadour songs, thus the son dance was created. From then onwards, the salsa dance was established as well as other early Cuban dance styles such as the cha cha cha, mambo, and so on.
