Description:

During the competition, a hunter sends his eagle to a dispatcher, who positions himself at the top of a hill. He rides his horse on the plain and calls his bird to land on his arm, or pounce on a carcass of a fox or hare, which is dragged by a rope. The birds are scored for precision, speed and agility. The winners are awarded medals and certificates for several achievements such as the eagle’s ability to land on the master’s arm, whilst riding a horse, as well as bird’s quick ability to catch prey.

The festival is not limited to falconry. In the festival’s two days, other competitions and performances are held, such as the double-humped Bactrian camel races, where young Kazakh men and women jokey. There is also a carcass-pulling competition, in which two riders pull between them a dead lamb, called bushkashi, which is tied by ropes between the competitors. The winner is the rider who manages to grab the whole carcass. For desert, a kiz kuar performance is held, which to an outsider, looks like a Whip your Husband competition. Couples gallop towards the cheering crowd as the woman tries to whip her husband while he tries to dodge every hit. The crowd truly enjoy watching this unique spectacle.
