Description:
“Kumbh” is defined as a “Jug”, while “Mela” means “Gathering” or a “Festival”. The name is often translated as the “Festival of the Jug”. According to Hindu mythology, during a time when the Gods still walked the earth, battles were waged between good and evil heavenly forces for the possession of amrita, a nectar that bestowed superpowers and eternal life on its drinkers. The amrita was produced and stored in a jug, kumbh, hence its name. To prevent the evil forces from seizing it, one of the good Gods escaped with the jug and flew around the world for twelve days, (equal to twelve human years) to avoid any ambush from the evil Gods. Whilst flying, four drops of the nectar drizzled over the rivers adjacent to four cities-Nashik, Ujjain, Allahabad and Haridwar. These are the four holy places where believers, pilgrims, intellectuals and monks rush to for the Kumbh Mela.
