Description:

The thousands of temples, stupas and pagodas that are spread across the plains of Bagan are the most impressive testaments to the religious devotion of Myanmar's people over the centuries. Buddhism is embedded in the foundations of the Burmese culture and Bagan is a microcosmos representing that in its absolute form. The Kingdom of Pagan was the first empire to unify the area known today as modern Myanmar. Between the 9th and 13th centuries, Bagan city gained credit for establishing the Burmese culture and ethnicity as well as Theravada Buddhism. Over this period of time, the city and kingdom grew in influence and stature and over 10000 temples were built. Unfortunately, less than a quarter remain today due to the active earthquake prone area. Nevertheless, the area remains an eminent invariable destination for Buddhist pilgrimage to this very day.
