Training the birds to be skilful hunters alongside human beings takes years to perfect

Description:

Training the birds to be skilful hunters alongside human beings takes years to perfect, and the relationship between the eagle and her tamer resembles the maternal bond between parent and child. To begin with, the hunters cover the eagle’s eyes with a specially-tailored blindfold called a tomaga. They also follow a system of rewarding good behaviour, for example, the eagle is not given food unless it obeys its tamer. In a painstaking process, the bird of prey, already a gifted hunter by birth, learns to push her boundaries. She learns to soar silently to high altitudes, to locate prey, attack it in stealth, and kill it with her enormous talons. After a decade of training, the eagle is set free to roam on her own.
