The sadhus are a diverse kind. The ones who go stark naked are called nagas babas. They smother their bodies in cremation ashes, never cut their hair and their eyes are constantly red due to the charas they’re always smoking. Then there are those who live their lives under strict spiritual and physical discipline, the Urdhwavahurs, who are distinct with their thin, skeletal bodies. There are the parijavakas, who remain perpetually silent because they’re under a strict oath to never utter a word. The shirashasinse are those who stay in the same body position for years - some stand while they sleep and lean their heads against a pole, while others hold one hand straight up, their joints visibly stiff after staying in the same position for years. The kalpvasis reside on the river banks and dedicate their lives to meditation, holy rites and bathing. Their faces are painted, their hair is wild and caked with dust and ash, and their bodies are smeared with the ashes of the deceased.
This photo was taken in a high iso and therefore it has a painting effect.
