Upon approaching Ulgi I was fortunate to witness a competition of Ice Archery. The rules are very simple. Two groups of 5-6 archers competed each other. The goal is to hit with the arrow a small ball made of cow leather, from a 40-meter distance, and bounce it out of a small square that is marked with snow around the balls. About twenty men, all belonging to the ethnic group Uriankhai, competed in various rounds. The first team to score one ball more than the number of its members, was declared victorious.
