The traditional long dress called Ao Dai, is worn by Vietnamese women at special occasions related to national holidays and official ceremonies. This is the Vietnamese national garment and is worn over the regular clothes. Originally it was worn by both sexes but nowadays most commonly worn by women. The word "ao dai" was originally applied to the outfit worn at the court of the Nguyen lords at Hue in the 18th century. This outfit bears a lot of pride and the ao dai emphasizes the way the dress ties feminine beauty to Vietnamese nationalism
