It is freezing cold, my body is wet and the legs are aching, but the sight of the masses of bathers is hypnotizing. In every Akhara, priority is given to the sadhus over the general crowd. They are the first to bathe, and the crowds of people then follow in. Hundreds of the sadhus crowd together on the river bank, yelling, growling and throwing their swords and pitchforks in the air, waiting for a magical signal to jump into the water. This is a mind-staggering moment. Watching everyone jumping and roaring into the freezing waters is something no man will ever forget. It is certainly the largest gathering of believers in the world and the experience is engraved deep in my memory cells forever.
