Praying to Shiva

Kumbh Mela lasts around two months, during which 40-70 million pilgrims take part. It’s difficult to estimate the exact number, but this is certainly the largest religious gathering in the world. Scores of people immerse in the sacred water end masse on several special days. One of the three mass immersions include the shahi snan, the royal bath. In ancient times, according to tradition, the holy orders were compelled to slay people as part of their mission to protect the dharma, the true way of life. Immersing in the holy river was therefore a way for them to wash away their sins.
